Tectonic Controls on Surface Erosion Rates in the Longmen Shan, Eastern Tibet

چکیده
The Longmen Shan range, located on the eastern margin of Tibetan Plateau, is characterized by steep topography and a shortening rate <3 mm/yr. This peculiar configuration source controversy questions about topographic evolution dynamics this orogenic plateau margin. Investigating variations in surface denudation over different spatial temporal scales important for better understanding evolution, but there still lack erosion-rate data averaged millennial timescales along frontal range Shan, especially its southern part. We present 25 new catchment-wide rates derived from 10Be concentrations river sediments across Shan. Our results show that average increase <0.15 mm/yr near Ya'an, Sichuan Basin, northwestward to >0.50 inside correlate with slope gradient, relief, channel steepness, specific stream power exhibit fair degree scattering at high values. In combination previous low-temperature thermochronology analyses, we found kyr- Myr-timescales be roughly consistent suggesting part close an exhumational steady state. terms distribution, exhumation are localized hanging walls major thrust faults, highlighting role tectonic structures regulating pattern favor “brittle crustal shortening” model which rock uplift largely controlled upper shortening. Along-strike distribution can probably attributed segmentation subsurface fault structures.

Erosion Associated with Seismically-Induced Landslides in the Middle Longmen Shan Region, Eastern Tibetan Plateau, China
The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake and associated co-seismic landslide was the most recent expression of the rapid deformation and erosion occurring in the eastern Tibetan Plateau. The erosion associated with co-seismic landslides balances the long-term tectonic uplift in the topographic evolution of the region; however, the quantitative relationship between earthquakes, uplift, and erosion is still ...
متن کاملDeep slip rates along the Longmen Shan fault zone estimated from repeating microearthquakes
[1] We investigated deep slip rates along the Longmen Shan fault zone where the devastating 2008 M7.9 Wenchuan earthquake occurred using repeating earthquake data recorded by two digital seismic networks near the fault. Using cross‐correlation analysis of waveform data, we identified a total of 231 doublets and 224 multiplets that have highly similar waveforms. Most of these sequences are aperi...
متن کاملA special issue on the great 12 May 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (Mw7.9): Observations and unanswered questions
The 12 May 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (Mw 7.9) ruptured the active Longmen Shan thrust belt bounding the eastern margin of the Tibetan plateau against the Sichuan basin (Fig. 1) (Burchfiel et al., 2008). Initial observations of this devastating earthquake were reported in several short papers focusing on coseismic slip and earthquake-fault geometry (e.g., Wang et al., 2008; Xu et al., 2009; Lin e...
متن کاملTopographic controls on erosion rates in tectonically active mountain ranges
The functional relationship between erosion rate and topography is central to understanding both controls on global sediment flux and the potential for feedback between tectonics, climate, and erosion in shaping topography. Analysis of a high-resolution (10-m-grid) DEM transect across the convergent orogen of the Olympic Mountains reveals a non-linear relation between long-term erosion rates an...
